Alpiq optimises energy costs at Cazis Tignez prison in Cazis, Graubünden
The new Cazis Tignez prison uses energy optimisation and commissioned Alpiq to install a comprehensive energy management system. With the integrated Xamax peak load optimisation system, the accrued network usage costs can be reduced by up to 30%.
Following a three-year construction period, the new prison in Cazis, Graubünden, was officially inaugurated in October 2019 and began operating in mid-February 2020. This new building has created around 150 modern prison spaces. It has also created around 120 jobs for the local economy. The prison has three main buildings, all of which are certified by Minergie and are compliant with modern sustainability requirements. As energy consumption needed to be optimised for environmental and cost reasons, Alpiq was contacted.
Before the construction phase began, Alpiq conducted an analysis of the expected energy consumption level, laying the foundations for an efficient load peak management. Alpiq also provided support for the electrical planning team during the implementation of the energy data acquisition system. The laundry and the prison kitchen were integrated into the energy management system. It regulates an electrical power of approximately 280 kW and controls the energy flows on the basis of the specified parameters and the power currently being drawn at the network usage point. The analysis of the energy data and the comprehensive consultation by the experts at Alpiq allow the prison’s technical manager to identify the bigger energy consumers and monitor, control and evaluate energy flows throughout the buildings.
“With the Xamax energy optimisation system, we consume less energy so that we make savings in our total operating costs. Efficient energy management was the key to ensuring a reliable power supply, reducing network usage costs and minimising our environmental impact”, says Urs Brunold, Head of Systems and Technical Services at the Office for the Execution of Penal Sentences and Justice Graubünden.
With the help of a federal incentive programme, Alpiq triggers industrial companies to make major investments in electricity efficiency
The Swiss Federal Office of Energy is using calls for competitive tenders within the framework of the federal ProKilowatt programme to promote the efficient use of electricity. Alpiq was awarded a federal grant of CHF 1.1 million for its Optimo plus 2019 programme. Alpiq advises energy-intensive industrial companies during the development and evaluation of energy savings potential and supports them with the implementation of the associated measures. Such measures entail, for example, the upgrading of the lighting of production halls or the replacement of industrial hot-air dryers with systems that consume less electricity. With the Optimo plus 2019 programme, Alpiq is stimulating investments in electricity efficiency by industrial companies amounting to approximately CHF 4.5 million.
Within the framework of Optimo plus 2019, Alpiq will initiate 55,000 MWh of electricity savings by the end of 2022. With this programme, Alpiq is helping Switzerland to achieve the efficiency targets formulated in the Energy Strategy 2050. Already in 2014 and 2015, Alpiq was awarded federal funding grants for programs within the framework of ProKilowatt. The previous Optimo plus 2014 programme has now expired, while Optimo plus 2015 is still being implemented. Numerous analyses have shown that strategically oriented energy management can largely eliminate idle times and inefficient work processes in production environments. The analyses also revealed that there is usually additional untapped potential for improving energy efficiency and thus saving electricity.
Federal ProKilowatt incentive Programme
The federal authorities use calls for competitive tenders as a tool to support projects and programmes that promote electricity efficiency and make a cost-effective contribution towards more economical electricity consumption in the industrial and services sectors as well as in private households. The grants are funded from a surcharge on the electricity grid and total up to CHF 50 million per year.

Schmiedewerk Stooss AG reduces electricity costs with Xamax system
Schmiedewerk Stooss AG in Hedingen is saving about CHF 15,000 per year with Xamax's energy optimisation system. Manufacturing high-quality forged parts requires a great deal of electrical energy and using the Xamax fully automatic load management system is paying off.
Financial support for new transformers at the Flumenthal power station thanks to Xamax
Building on its many years of experience of Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) competitive tenders, Xamax AG has won CHF 180,000 of financial support for new transformers at the Flumenthal run-of-river power station. To do so, Xamax professionals worked closely with Alpiq Hydro Aare AG, the hydropower station operator.
The SFOE puts energy efficiency measures out to tender through its specialist department ProKilowatt every year. After the operating company tested the older transformers in the Flumenthal power station, Xamax formulated an appropriate support project, entitled “Efficient Transformation”. By means of the new models and their lower loss levels, ProKilowatt estimates that a total of 5,600 MWh of electricity can be saved over a useful life of 25 years. Moreover, this quantity represents additional production for the power station.
In June 2018, the Federal Office of Energy granted Xamax and Alpiq Hydro Aare AG the sum of CHF 180,000, representing approximately one fifth of the investment costs. The three new transformers should enter operation during 2018. Xamax has valuable experience of the ProKilowatt financial support programmes. Because of this, Xamax and Alpiq Hydro Aare are looking into further possibilities for collaboration.
Through the ProKilowatt programme, the Federal Office of Energy supports energy efficiency measures to reduce electricity consumption in the industry, trade and services sectors as well as by households. Funding is granted to projects and programmes that save as much electricity as possible per provided Swiss franc. The ProKilowatt financial support is funded by an electricity grid surcharge. Up to CHF 50 million is available annually for competitive calls for tenders.
